Seine fishing - experience with professional fishermen
Seine fishing is an intangible cultural heritage maintained by professional fishermen. Although the number of practitioners of seine fishing is decreasing, it holds a strong position in fishing in Eastern Finland.
Now is a unique opportunity to join local professional fishermen to experience seine fishing on Lake Puruvesi, moving on the frozen lake, witnessing the morning and the sunrise, engaging in the work, and the most exciting moment, of course, is the lifting of the vendaces caught from the lake.
On the ice, we move with snowmobiles or snowdogs. A rectangular hole is made at the fishing spot, where the seine is lowered under the ice. Robots are placed on the outer edges of the seine and controlled through the ice in the right direction. The seine is pulled about 500 meters under the ice and lifted on the ice using manual strength. Air bubbles are used to prevent the vendaces from escaping the seine. The catch can sometimes be just a few kilograms, or it can be well over 1000 kg.
2-6 people can join the fishing trip, and throughout the excursion, a local assistant will be present to ensure that clients have an unforgettable experience. You'll get to experience fishing from a professional's perspective.
Would you like to join the adventure and observe their work? You’ll also have the chance to try some of the tasks yourself if you wish.
The trip lasts about 5-6 hours. The weather is usually brisk in the early morning, so we dress warmly in coveralls, waterproof boots, and mittens. Finally, we put on headlamps and move to the fishing spot with the snowmobiles. Warm equipment (coveralls/jacket + insulated pants, boots, gloves, and headlamp), snowmobile/snowdog, guidance, a personal guide, snacks, and coffee are included in the trip price. Before the trip, the guide will contact the participants to discuss the final details.
